Join us in celebrating Kevin R. Free, recipient of the 2024 New York Independent Theater’s Everett Quinton Award.

Mile Square Theatre is delighted to share that Artistic Director, Kevin R. Free, has been honored with the New York Independent Theater’s Everett Quinton Award.

This award, named in honor of legendary theatre maker and leader of the Ridiculous Theatre Company Everett Quinton, is presented to Kevin in recognition of his outstanding contributions to indie/off-off broadway theatre and to celebrate his positive impact within the theatre community.

Kevin R. Free is a versatile writer, performer, and director whose work has been showcased and developed across prestigious platforms including the Moth Radio Hour, The Fire This Time Festival, The New Black Fest, and the historic Apollo Theatre as part of the New Works Lab Cohort.

He states, “I love producing the work of living playwrights, and I love amplifying all voices: what is the context of this show? How can we illuminate the story of this play to elucidate all that is happening in the world outside the play? And I love asking playwrights – who can answer me – why this play? Why now?”

In 2025, he will direct the world premiere of Donnetta Lavinia Grays’ play Kudzu Calling at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. He will also showcase his talents on the Mile Square Theatre mainstage directing Cheryl Strayed’s Tiny Beautiful Things, adapted for the stage by Nia Vardalos.

Please join us in extending our heartfelt congratulations to Kevin R. Free on this well-deserved honor. We are privileged to have such an innovative, talented, and esteemed individual as part of the Mile Square Theatre community.
